Alexandra Levits Water Cooler Wisdom Why You Shouldnt Be Afraid of People Analytics
Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Why You Shouldn't Be Afraid of People Analytics On a recentSilkRoad webinar with HR Daily Advisor, we talked about how advances in people analytics are augmenting the business and HR operations of modern organizations. The event, called, The Next Frontier of People Analytics, explored how HR can up its game to become a strategic partner and essential source of analytical guidance. As our hour concluded, there were many terrific questions, but very honest one in particular caught our attention. My company is scared of people analytics. What if the results show that something is really wrong? People analytics involves the practice of extracting information from existingdata sets in order to determine patterns and predict future outcomes and trends. Itâs now possible to examine data regarding recruitment, performance, employee mobility, and other factors, and use it to determine what does (and doesnât) drive business results. People analytics holds the promise of incredible value. Itâs not hard to get started, and analytics implementations are known to pay for themselves far more quickly than other types of technology. Yet there is fear: fear of risk and compliance issues, fear of a lack of available talent to leverage data insights, and fear that data is simply too âall over the place.â For the rest of my answer, feel free to check out the full piece on the SilkRoad blog.

How to take charge of your job search
How to take charge of your job search Whether youâre looking for a promotion or fancy a complete career change, taking charge of your job search is a must. With a positive attitude, plenty of ambition and lots of hard work youâre sure to find something thatâs worth getting up for every morning, so hereâs how to land the role of your dreams. Apply for jobs digitally These days, you can apply for a number of jobs digitally by submitting your CV and cover letter to multiple employers. While the process is straightforward, the key is to be proactive as (unless youâre extremely lucky) an ideal role isnât going to fall into your lap without you putting in any effort. There really is no excuse for slacking: with recruiters such as http://callcentrejobsinmanchester.co.uk/ posting regional job vacancies on a daily basis there are plenty of opportunities to find a great role right on your doorstep. Set a job hunt schedule If you havenât had a job in a while or have been worn down by the daily grind it can be easy to procrastinate and do everything but look for a new life-enriching job â" after all, sitting around in your pyjamas has got to be better than the nine-to-five, right? Well, a sedentary lifestyle might suit some people but actually making the most of your skills and giving yourself a purpose can be extremely rewarding, so long as youâre doing the right thing. With this in mind, it is well-worth setting yourself a strict job hunt schedule where you sit down and actively apply for roles rather than walking the dog, cleaning the house or calling your friends. Conquer your fears Many people are scared of change but there are ways to conquer your fears and progress down a career path that suits your personality and interests. Of course, starting a new job is always daunting but taking risks is part of life and will prevent your life and skill set from stagnating. To help lower anxiety, start by writing down what youâre good at and look for jobs that match your strengths. If youâve a love for writing, for instance, and have experience as a copywriter or editor, a content executive position could be right up your street. Donât be afraid to push yourself, however. Have faith in your abilities and donât shy away from leadership or management roles as these often come with a healthy salary and could improve your confidence as well as your bank balance. Ask questions at an interview The purpose of an interview is not only to see if the employer thinks youâre suitable for the role. Itâs also the ideal opportunity for you to ask as many questions as you want to ensure youâll be happy accepting any job offers that might come your way. While many job descriptions are fairly thorough, there might be details missing that you want to know more about such as working hours or upcoming projects. Donât be shy. Voicing your opinion and asking relevant, informed and intelligent interview questions is a great way to show your interest but be careful not to ask anything which is clearly stated in the job ad or companyâs website as this will show a lack of research. Taking charge of your job search can leave you feeling positive and in control, so it is certainly worth biting the bullet and looking for the best way to enhance your career.

When You Ring Your Bell, Someone Will Come - CareerEnlightenment.com
For many, this can be an impossible question. Weâre conditioned from an early age to not brag. If we bragged as kids, our parents told us to stop. Or maybe we held back in fear of alienating our friends. For me, I had friends who bragged and I vowed to not be as annoying as them. But remember that there is a difference between bragging and telling someone honestly what makes you so good. I recall my grandmotherâs words to me, since I was such a quiet kid, âHoney, youâre not good enough to be so modestâ.Here is an exercise to follow if you find yourself stuck.Think of a time in your career that you were the most successful. It could be any time, at a job, in life, with friends, etc. Recall what happened as vividly as possible. Then ask yourself, âwhat did I do to make this a successâ? What role did I play in the eventâs successful outcome?Hereâs an example. My client Stef couldnât articulate what she is the best at. So she recalled a time when she helped a local chap ter of a charity she belongs to go from ranking 150 to 15 in the country, for charitable donations.I asked her what role she played in this. And her answer became the center of her personal brand. She said, âI had a goal of taking my chapter to number 1. I know we had the resources but lacked the organization. So I put together a plan and delegated the right people to execute the right parts of it. I held weekly status calls to keep them accountable, since they were just volunteers. Pretty soon, all of them were making their own decisions, without me. I was very proud.âShe took a failing volunteer organization and through sharing her vision and plan, turned it around completely. I would say that this is a skill many organizations would love to have.Bell ringing on Twitter and FacebookTwitter and Facebook, unlike LinkedIn, focus more on posts than on profiles, mirroring an actual networking situation. If you rang your bell on every post, people would feel that you are indeed bragg ing. Consider the 80|10|10 rule for online postings.80% of your posts should be conversational, including questions, observations, photos, quotes, and other original content.10% of your posts should be reactions to other people, including comments, retweets, likes and interruptions.10% of your posts can be self-promotional, including personal branding statements, statements about what you are looking for, something you accomplished or something nice someone else said about you. Some guidelines for bell ringersIf you noticed from Stefâs story, it wasnât really about her. It was about what she accomplished with her unique skills. The difference between bragging and telling someone what makes you the best is focus. Here are some guidelines you can use to avoid bragging and do more bell ringing:Focus on how your skills accomplished something greater than yourselfHave a story to back up your claims of greatnessBe just as willing to talk about what other people did to help when askedKno w when to ring your bell and when to stopBell ringing is always about a promise of how you can do something similar for someone else, it adds valueRing your bell to meIâd love to hear what makes you the best at what you do. Are you feeling weird about sharing your successes? Do you have an annoying bragging friend? Feel free to share yours on the online version of this magazine.
